The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is the third home video-game console from Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in 2006, the PlayStation 3 capitalized on the popularity of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 with hardware improvements, new PS3 games, and sequels to popular franchises.
The PS3 supports high-definition video playback, superior processing and graphical capabilities, varying sizes of hardware storage space, and is the only home video-game console on the market today that plays Blu-ray discs. The PS3 is also the only console that can display 3D movies and video games.
Like the PlayStation 2, the first model of the PS3 was backward compatible with games made for the previous PlayStation consoles, but Sony removed this feature. All of the current PS3 models on the market can't play PS2 games, but they can play games for the original PlayStation.
While the PlayStation 2 had a modem accessory which made it online-enabled, PS3 is the first console from Sony that is online ready out of the box. Sony supports the PS3's online features with the PlayStation Network (PSN), Sony's free online service that allows PS3 gamers to connect with their friends, play online PSN games, and access the PSN Store, where they can purchase downloadable content for their games, online and exclusive PSN games, and digitally rent or buy television episodes and movies from the PlayStation Network Video Store.
An established electronics company based in Japan, Sony first entered the video-game market in 1994 with the PlayStation. The PlayStation quickly became popular with gamers who were impressed with its 3D graphics (a cutting edge technology at the time) and CD-ROM media format, which allowed it to play higher quality sound and video. The PlayStation became a worldwide success, eclipsing the sales of competing consoles from the more established video-game companies, Nintendo and Sega.
Sony followed the success of the PlayStation with the PlayStation 2, released in 2000. Building on the popularity of the PlayStation with more games, better graphics, and the capability to play DVDs, the PlayStation 2 became an even bigger success, and it remains the best-selling video-game console ever. In 2003 Sony introduced the EyeToy, a camera that connects to the PlayStation 2 and allows the player to play compatible games by tracking their motions. A more sophisticated iteration of this accessory, the PlayStation Eye, came out for the PS3 in 2007. Sony expanded on the PS3's motion-control capabilities in 2010 with PlayStation Move, a two-piece controller similar to Nintendo's Wii remote, which works in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye to produce more accurate motion tracking.
